Note | Rawa Singkil is designated as Natural Landscape Area based on Forestry Minister’s Decree no. 166 / Kpts-II / 1998 on the change of function and appointment of Singkil Swamp Forest area located in South Aceh Regency of 102,500 hectares into Nature Reserve area by the name of Rawa Singkil Wildlife Sanctuary. However, the Decree of the Minister of Environment and Forestry No. 103 / MenLHK-II / 2015 determines the area to be reduced to 81,338 hectares. Until 1992, Rawa Singkil was the last remaining intact swamp forest still intact and still lagging on the west coast of Sumatra. (Giesen et al., 1992) …2018? The Rawa Singkil Wildlife Conservation Area is the largest peat swamp forest area in Aceh Province. This area is a habitat for Sumatran orang-utans (Pongo abelii). |

Identification | Primates: Sumatran Orangutans (Pongo abelii), monkeys (Macaca nemestrina), long-tailed monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), Gibbon (Hylobates sp) and gibbon (Symphalangus sp).Mammals: Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), Sumatran Elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus), deer (Cervus unicolor), deer (Muntiacus muntjak) and wild boar (Sus scrofa). Sun bears may also still be found in some swamp forests, although the population may not be as dense as it used to be. (van Schaik, 1999) Birds: Wetland International-Indonesia research program shows that the Singkil swamp is a habitat for approximately 40 species of birds. Some species of birds have high conservation value such as clothing (Ciconia stormi) belonging to endangered species, white wing ducks (Cairina scutulata) and tongtong storks (Leptoptilos javanicus) which are considered threatened by IUCN red list (1994). more search needed … |
