Note | Martelu Purba Nature Reserve was previously a protected forest that had been established since the days of colonialism in 1916 in the Zeelfbesstur dated July 8, 1916, later confirmed by the Boundary Committee appointed based on the Besluit of the East Coast Governor of Pertja island dated 23 August 1935. 125 / B / AZ, as per Proces Verbaal made on September 20, 1938 with Register No.9 / SM.Based on the Decree of the Minister of Agriculture No.923 / Kpts / Um / 12/1982 dated December 27, 1982, it was stated that the Martelu Purba Regions Register 9 / SM located in Simalungun Regency were included in the Map of Forest Planning and Land Use Plans / Level I of North Sumatra and designated as Martelu Purba Protected Forest. Furthermore, in 1993 with the Decree of the Minister of Forestry No.471 / Kpts-II / 1993 dated September 2, 1993, the status of the area turned function into Nature Reserve. The forest here is not natural forest but is an artificial forest of reforestation. In 1980, when the area was still a protected forest, by a forest figure of North Sumatra, the area was chosen as a site for reforestation activities with the planting of Meranti (Shorea sp.) The success of the reforestation efforts has formed a forest of composition of the same species, which is meranti and produces a tropical rainforest of dipterocarp that is the same age as the same highland forest stratum. Meranti stands have now reached a height of 28-30 meters with a trunk diameter of 60-80 cm. This forest feature is a thin layer of soil and the roots of trees can not penetrate deep into the soil, so many of them develop supporting roots that support the tall and straight trunks. This area is very potential in the development of research in the field of forestry, ecology, as well as to study the trees (Arboretum) |
